Ponera violacea is an orchid species identified by (Lindl.) Rchb.f. in 1854. Culture information and photos for this orchid are commonly detailed under the currently accepted name of Scaphyglottis graminifolia.

ORIGIN: Found from Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia and Venezuela in wet montane and cloud forests at elevations of 850 to 2600 meters.

DESCRIPTION: Small sized, cool to hot growing, caespitose epiphyte with fusiform-cylindric stem segments that appear apically one atop another and have 1 to 2 basal sheaths with 2 linear-oblong, acute leaves that blooms on a fasciculate, subsessile inflorescence occurring at the apex of each successive pseudobulb and holding the flowers against the leaf base occurring mostly in the spring.
