Orchid Species: Peristeria guttata

Peristeria guttata is an orchid species identified by Knowles & Westc. in 1838.
ORIGIN: Found in Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Surinam, Brazil and Peru in tropical wet forests as a medium to large sized, hot growing, caespitose epiphyte at elevations around 400 meters.
DESCRIPTION: Found in Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Surinam, Brazil and Peru in tropical wet forests as a medium to large sized, hot growing, caespitose epiphyte at elevations around 400 meters with an ovoid, smooth, trifoliate pseudobulb subtended by several pairs of basal sheaths soon evanescent with coriaceous, dark green, plicate, articulated leaf with a channeled petiole that blooms in the late winter and early spring on an arching, basal, 2 to 3 1/2" [5 to 8 cm] long, racemose inflorescence arising as a new growth appears with acuminate bracts carrying globose, fleshy flowers that only partialy open.
