ORIGIN: Found in Spain, France, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary, Switzerland, Italy, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, Ukraine and Turkey in poor grasslands, mountain pastures, montane marshes, and open areas in conifer forests at elevations of 1000 to 2700 meters.

DESCRIPTION: Medium sized, cool to cold growing terrestrial orchid occurring in limestone, shale and granite soils in moist meadows with 2 ovoid tubers giving rise to several leaves that arise from the center of the stem that blooms on a erect, racemose, 1 to 2 [2.5 to 5 cm] long inflorescence with the flowers clustered at the apex in a dense ovoid to globose ball and occurring in the later spring through mid summer.
