Orchid Species: Epidendrum cardioglossum
(This name is currently accepted by Kew.)
Epidendrum cardioglossum is an orchid species identified by Rchb.f. in 1850.
ORIGIN: Found in Venezuela in cloud forests at elevations of 1400 to 3000.
DESCRIPTION: Large sized, cool to cold growing epiphyte with a more or less erect, then arching in the upper 1/3 stem enveloped completely by tubular, nervose, rather rough, old grey leafless and leaf-bearing sheaths carrying, a few spread unevenly throughout the apical half, lightly sulcate, thin, carinate, apically unequal in older leaves. Curious, that in successive years, the plant produces a new 4 to 5 side branch arising near the apex of the older cane and has an arching to pendant manner of growth with newer leaves held at the apex of the new short cane that blooms in the fall through spring on a terminal, short, racemose inflorescence with the few, simultaneously opening, resupinateyellow to green flowers held at all angles.
FLOWER SIZE: 1/2 inch [1.25 cm]
