ORIGIN: Found in Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua in lower montane forests at elevations around 330 meters.

DESCRIPTION: Small to medium sized, hot growing epiphyte that is often confused with or cited as a synonym of Enc. guatemalensis but has clustered, conical to ovoid pseudobulbs partially enveloped basally by a few scarious, soon evanescent sheaths and carry 2 to 3 strap-shaped, obtuse, basally graduating into the clasping base leaves as well as having the lateral lobes of the lip distincly different. This species blooms in the spring and summer on a terminal, 2' [60 cm] long, panicle arising on a mature pseudobulb with a few to many glistening, sourly fragrant flowers unlike other Encyclia.

FLOWER SIZE: 1 1/5 inch [3 cm] -- information provided by Jay Pfahl, author of the Internet Orchid Species Encyclopedia (IOSPE).
