Orchid Species: Orchis fragrans

Orchis fragrans is an orchid species identified by Pollini in 1811. Culture information and photos for this orchid are commonly detailed under the currently accepted name of Anacamptis coriophora.

ORIGIN: Found in Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, the Balearic Islands, France, Corsica, Sardinia, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary, Switzerland, Italy, Yugoslavia, Albania, Aegean Islands, Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Russia, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Israel and Lebanon in full sun in grassy areas, boggy meadows, moorlands, flushed slopes and woodland edges prone to flodding at elevations up to 2500 meters in slightly acidic soil.

DESCRIPTION: Small to medium sized, cold growing terrestrial orchid with a robust, pale green stem with 4 to 10 basal, near erect, unmarked, linear to linear-lanceolate, slightly keeled leaves and smaller, clasping cauline leaves almost to the tip of the stem that blooms in the late spring and early summer on a oblong or cylindrical, 1 1/2 to 4 1/2' [45 to 135 cm] long, densly many [15 to 25] flowered inflorescence with fragrant, color variable flowers.
