CALCIUM: Deficiency Black areas appear on cattleyas during hot weather but they are not likely caused by sunburn although the symptoms are similar; deficiency symptoms are most prevalent when cattleyas are in active growth and new leads are maturing; add a little lime to the top of the potting medium: a level teaspoon to a 6inch pot is ample. CALCIUM: Functions as Fertilizer Occurs in plants as calcium pectate; cements cells together; moves various compounds within the plant; enhances root development; is relatively immobile so a continuous supply is necessary. AU75-47 0
CALCIUM: Supplying a Necessary Element Calcium hydroxide is the most suitable source, at 50 to 200 ppm., or one gram of Hydrated lime to 10 litres of water, or 2.25 grams per 5 gallons of water; refer to AU84-97 0
