Lip-like characteristics in the petals are considered an abnormal regularity in normally irregular flowers, as in splash-petal cattleyas; causes are uncertain; may lead to advancement in breeding but mutation rates are only one to ten million; induced mutation is worth trying in orchids. A83-722
