Derivation/Pronunciation:
keel-ee-OR-kissamp-lee-AH-tah
Common name: This plant is often called the "turtle orchid."
Plant: This is an interesting species which was recently renamed and removed from the genus Oncidium. It is distinguished by its flattened and spotted pseudobulbs that somewhat resemble small tortoises. The leaves are more like Phalaenopsis leaves than typical Oncidium leaves.
Flowers: See illustrations. Inflorescence reaches over a meter and bears dozens of small yellow flowers, which may be pure yellow or may be spotted with red in the sepals. The broad lobes of the labellum are usually clear of any spotting.

Distribution:
Guatemala to Venezuela.

Culture: Temperature tolerant (will grow cool to warm). Requires bright light but not direct sun. Does well mounted or in clay pots.
