Financial Support for Grassroots AIDS Work 2005

HIV positive children enact a native skit at the Fundamor hospice where they live in Cali, Colombia.

OrchidMania provides financial support to AIDS programs which receive little or no taxpayer support and must rely primarily on individual donations.

Since so many of our plant donations come from outside the United States, some of our financial support goes to programs in Asia and Latin America. Groups are eligible to receive OrchidMania funding for a maximum of three years before they must reapply.

In 2003 the following groups will receive financial support from OrchidMania's "World's Largest Orchid Garage Sale."

Fundación Dar Amor

The main objective of Foundación Dar Amor ("Fundamor") is to provide psychological, dental, nutritional and palliative medical care as well as occupational therapy and spiritual assistance to persons with low income who are infected and affected with the HIV virus. The institution provides hospice care to AIDS patients and comprehensive care for HIV infected individuals.

Fundamor has three primary objectives:

  • Fundamor provides HIV prevention education.
Provide efficacious alternatives for infants and children infected with HIV/AIDS virus helping to solve their psychosocial, spiritual and physical needs. Affected children from zero (0) to ten (10) years old are cared for at the Institution and also at home.
  • Provide attention to HIV positive pregnant women in medical, psychological and occupational therapy aspects. Also care for the born babies if need be. This service must be expanded to include home-care.
  • Provide hospice care to AIDS patients who are rejected by society or have low income, so they can receive medical, psychological and spiritual attention.

This is OrchidMania's second year contributing to Fundamor.

Camp Sunburst
Camp Sunburst operates free summer camps in the California Sierra Nevada for children with AIDS and their families. When children get AIDS they are quickly deprived of their childhood. Families are stressed emotionally, economically, and socially. Sunburst Project camps allow kids with HIV to take a vacation from AIDS for a week. Recreational opportunities and volunteer medical staff take pressure off kids and families, and allow them to regroup and enjoy each other -- sometimes for the last time.

Camp Sunburst is a long-time favorite of OrchidMania and we are pleased to be contributing to their program again this year.

Dendrobium kingianumSupport the Children Foundation
Support the Children Foundation has set up four homes for orphaned or abandoned children infected with HIV. The group provides love and care to these unfortunate children in a family type setting. They also teach HIV infected parents how to care for their infected children in order to avoid the possibility that they will be abandoned. The organization serves Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand.

Support the Children Foundation is a long-time favorite of OrchidMania and we are pleased to be contributing to their program again this year.
